First the engine must be warm. Some cars will be able to create flames at standstill, usually done by gently revving up then letting the revs slowly return to idle whilst lightly blip ping the throttle, or sponging on and off the throttle in the mid rev range. Nearly all cars should see results whilst driving at speed, the technique here is to accelerate hard in gear and then without changing up, just let the revs get pulled down again, and as with flames at standstill, sometimes lightly blip ping tell throttle on the rev descent can achieve greater results.
Basically when you let back off the throttle after a burst of acceleration it is the best time for excess fuel vapour to be released into the exhaust gas. Once flames are achieved the techniques can be perfect for great results. Ignition systems can involve high voltages emitted from the coil component.
